How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT answers?

Short answer: you can't buy your way in, and that's the best news a small business has gotten in twenty years.

When someone asks ChatGPT "who's the best flooring contractor near Boca Raton," there's no ad auction running behind that answer. The AI is doing something closer to what a well-read neighbor does — pulling together everything it has seen about local businesses and recommending the one it can describe most confidently. Your job is to be that business.

Here's the plain-English version of how the engines decide, and what I do about each part:

They read the open web — all of it — and they reward consistency. Your name, address, and phone number — what us SEO folks call your NAP — need to say the same thing everywhere they appear: your website, your Google Business Profile, Bing, the directories. Engines cross-check your NAP the way a bank checks a signature, and every mismatch is a flicker of doubt. AI engines don't recommend businesses they're unsure about. Boring work. Decisive results.

They quote websites they can actually read. AI engines lift answers from pages with clean structure — one clear headline, questions answered directly underneath, real text instead of design soup. If your site buries its answers in sliders and stock-photo banners, the engine moves on to a competitor it can quote.

They lean on the question itself. The engines search using the same phrases your customers type. Pages built to answer those exact questions — in the heading, in the first sentence, in plain words — are the pages that get cited. That's not a trick; it's the whole discipline now called AEO, and it's what I've built my own site around.

They check whether anyone else vouches for you. Reviews, mentions, listings, links. An AI recommending a business is putting its credibility on the line, so it favors businesses the rest of the web already talks about.

Here's the sentence to keep: AI engines don't rank pages — they recommend businesses. The one that gets recommended is the one the machines can read, verify, and describe with confidence.

None of this happens overnight, and anyone who promises you a shortcut into ChatGPT's answers is selling the 2026 version of a link scheme. What actually works is making your business the clearest, most consistent, most quotable answer to the question your customer is already asking — and that's exactly the work I do.
