Why is my phone not ringing from Google anymore?

If your phone used to ring from Google and doesn't anymore, something specific changed — and it probably wasn't your work. Businesses don't usually get worse. Their visibility does.

Here's where I look, in order, when an owner brings me this exact problem:

First: the map. When a local customer searches for what you do, the top of the results shows three businesses on a map — phone numbers and reviews right there, no clicking through to anybody's website. For a local business, those three map listings are where the calls actually come from. If you're not in them, you're not really in the game, no matter what page your website ranks on.

Second: the profile behind your listing. That map runs on Google Business Profiles, and most owners haven't opened theirs since the day it was made. Wrong categories. No photos since 2019. Zero posts. Sometimes a duplicate listing splitting your reviews in half — I'm untangling exactly that mess for a client right now, and it can quietly strangle a business. Google recommends profiles that look alive and trustworthy. A neglected profile drifts down until the phone goes quiet, and the owner never gets a memo about it.

Third: what Google became. Search has been keeping more visitors for itself — answering questions right on the results page, and now with AI-generated answers sitting above everything. Fewer people click through to websites than ever. The customers still calling are calling from the map and from AI recommendations, which makes those two surfaces the whole ballgame for a local business.

Fourth: the website itself. Sometimes the site is the anchor dragging everything down — too slow, too old, unreadable to the engines deciding who to recommend. When that's the case, I'll tell you straight, because patching it wastes your money. But I check it last, because for most local businesses the fastest wins are sitting in the profile, not the website.

The sentence to keep: your phone didn't stop ringing because customers stopped searching — it stopped because the places they now look stopped showing you.

The fix starts with knowing which of those four problems is yours. That's a diagnosis, not a guess — and I'll run it for you free.
